این کتاب به زبانی ساده تمامی موارد مورد نیاز یک محقق را از ابتدای آماده‌سازی پیش‌نویس مقاله تا مرحله ارسال آن در سایت مجله توضیح می‌دهد. این کتاب بسیار مناسب افراد مبتدی است تا با بخش‌های مختلف یک مقاله آشنا شوند و اصطلاحات مربوطه را بشناسند.

هر چند این کتاب به زبان‌های مختلف ترجمه شده است، اما زبان انگلیسی آن بسیار ساده و قابل فهم است و یک دانشجو با سطح پایین زبان انگلیسی می‌تواند مطالب را کاملاً دریافت کند.

از نکات مثبت این کتاب آن است که از سال 1979 تا کنون، هشت بار ویرایش و به‌روز شده است. مطالعه این کتاب حتی به افرادی که سال‌هاست در حال نگارش مقالات علمی و فنی هستند نیز توصیه می‌شود.

به‌عنوان مثال، شاید بسیاری از پژوهشگران ندانند که هر پاراگراف از مقدمه، هدفی را دنبال می‌کند. یا این‌که هنگام وارد کردن اسامی نویسندگان در ضرورت حضور بعضی نویسندگان یا جایگاه آن‌ها در ترتیب اسامی شک کنند. این کتاب با ذکر مثال، این تردیدها را برطرف می‌کند.

نویسندگان در بخش‌های انتهایی کتاب، پا را فراتر از عنوان کتاب گذاشته و به مطالب جالبی می‌پردازند. برای مثال؛ نحوه نگارش پایان‌نامه، توصیه‌نامه، کاور لتر و…!

درباره نویسندگان

نویسنده اول این کتاب، خانم «باربارا گستل»، استاد تمام دانشگاه تگزاس آمریکا (Texas A&M University) است. اما به نظر می‌رسد که اولین بار در سال 1979، «رابرت دی» کتابی تحت این عنوان منتشر کرده است و به‌تدریج خانم گستل همکاری خود را با دی شروع کرده و اسم وی به جایگاه اول آمده است. دکتر رابرت دی در انجمن میکروب‌شناسی آمریکا فعالیت می‌کند.
